In this case, the work involved a John Deere T550 multi-key combine harvester, equipped with a John Deere 6068HT082 engine. The scope of work included power unit diagnostics, engine removal from the machine, transportation to our facility in Kojszówka, comprehensive component verification, necessary overhaul work, engine installation, and post-repair testing.

After the basic diagnostic procedures had been completed, it was decided to remove the engine and transfer it to the workshop for further verification. This approach makes it possible to assess not only the component that is probably responsible for the symptoms, but the entire crank-and-piston system and other components that may affect the durability of the overhauled unit.
Removing the engine from the John Deere T550 combine harvester
Removing an engine from agricultural machinery requires appropriate preparation. In the case of the John Deere T550, the work began with securing the machine and preparing the unit for removal. The removal is carried out by our mechanics, while a crane provided by the customer is used to lift and remove the engine.
Before disconnecting the power unit, all connections between the engine and the machine must be properly organised. The mechanics disconnect cables and auxiliary equipment, cooling system hoses, intake hoses, and other connections necessary for safely removing the unit.
We pay particular attention to the components of the cooling system. Hoses and connections are secured in a way that reduces the risk of contamination and the ingress of dirt into the system. The intake system is secured in a similar manner. This is important because, after an engine overhaul, the cleanliness of the systems working with the power unit is important for its proper operation.
The engine mounts are then disconnected. Once it has been confirmed that the unit is no longer connected to the machine's components, the engine is prepared for removal using a crane provided by the customer. After being lowered from the engine compartment, the engine can be prepared for transportation to our facility in Kojszówka.

Verification of the John Deere 6068HT082 engine in the workshop
After the engine was delivered to our workshop, detailed verification began. In the case of a unit whose technical condition is not fully known, the process begins by assessing whether the crankshaft can rotate freely. The engine should complete a full 720-degree rotation without excessive or unusual resistance.
The unit is then prepared for disassembly. The engine is dismantled into individual components, while the parts are cleaned and inspected on an ongoing basis. This makes it possible to gradually determine the actual extent of wear and check whether the initially suspected cause of the failure is actually confirmed by the mechanical condition of the engine.

Such a detailed inspection is important because proper cooperation between the crankshaft, connecting rods, and bearings is one of the basic conditions for long-lasting operation of the unit.
The remaining engine components are inspected in parallel. The verification includes, among other things, pistons, rings, cylinder liners, cylinder head, camshaft, and auxiliary equipment. The turbocharger is checked for axial and radial play.
Repair of the crank-and-piston system
The most important stage of the John Deere 6068HT082 engine overhaul was the rebuilding of the crank-and-piston system components. It was in this area that wear corresponding to the earlier symptoms was confirmed.
The crankshaft underwent detailed measurements. If wear of the mating surfaces is found, regeneration by grinding the crankshaft is possible, of course within the limits permitted for the given component. Cylinder head inspection and regeneration
During the overhaul, we do not limit ourselves to components directly related to the cause of the failure. The engine cylinder head is also thoroughly checked to determine whether it can be reused.
Cylinder head verification includes inspection of valve seats, clearances, and sealing. A leak test is performed by immersing the cylinder head in heated water and applying compressed air. By observing escaping air, it is possible to determine whether the cylinder head has leaks indicating damage.
If the condition of the components requires regeneration, the scope of work may include, among other things, cylinder head resurfacing and replacement of valve guides and valves. All work is performed based on the earlier verification rather than according to an arbitrarily assumed scope.
Fuel system and engine auxiliary equipment
A comprehensive engine overhaul also requires checking the components responsible for its proper fuel supply and auxiliary equipment. The scope of verification depends on the design of the unit and its technical condition.
Fuel system components may be checked for correct operation and operating parameters. If required by the design and scope of the repair, the injection pump may be tested on a test bench, while fuel system components may be sent to a specialised facility for regeneration.
The turbocharger is also inspected. During verification, its axial and radial play is checked. The condition of the remaining auxiliary equipment that may affect proper engine start-up and subsequent operation is also assessed.
Professional assembly of the John Deere 6068HT082 engine
After all components have been verified, the engine assembly process begins. This is a stage that requires the correct sequence of work, precision, and control of individual connections.
Before assembly, the components are properly prepared and cleaned. The mechanics check mating surfaces and mounting locations. The crank-and-piston system is assembled while maintaining the correct installation sequence. Particular attention is required when properly seating the bearings, preparing the crankshaft, and installing the connecting rods and pistons.

One of the most important stages of the work is testing the engine on an engine dynamometer. The dynamometer makes it possible to perform a test under controlled load conditions. Among other things, operating stability, response to changes in load, and the behaviour of the unit during longer operation are checked. At the same time, it is possible to determine whether any unwanted symptoms appear that could indicate the need for additional inspection.
If the engine maintains proper operating parameters after the initial test period, we proceed to the next stage. The unit is repeatedly subjected to higher loads. This makes it possible to check the engine's behaviour under conditions more similar to actual operation.
This is precisely why the engine dynamometer is an important part of the overhaul process. It makes it possible to separate the repair stage from the installation stage in the machine and check the engine before it returns to the combine's engine compartment. It is also an additional level of quality control for the completed rebuild.
Dynamometer testing is also important from the perspective of safe subsequent installation. If the engine passes the controlled tests, the customer receives a unit whose operation has been checked before installation in the machine. This reduces the risk of a situation in which, after the engine has been installed, it would have to be removed from the combine again to resolve a problem detected only during initial operation.

After the overhaul has been completed and the engine has successfully passed the dynamometer tests, it can return to the machine. The installation is carried out by our mechanics, while a crane provided by the customer is used to place the unit into the engine compartment.
Installation is not limited to mechanically placing the engine in the compartment. The unit must be correctly positioned and secured, after which all connections between the engine and the remaining combine systems must be restored. Mounts, connections, and components responsible for proper cooperation between the power unit and the machine are checked.
We pay particular attention to the intake system. Air hoses and their connections must be correctly installed and leak-free. We inspect the piping and connection points because a leak in the intake system may negatively affect the operation of the power unit.
The cooling system hoses and other connections are checked in a similar manner. Components that show wear or whose condition raises concerns may require replacement. Connections are inspected for correct installation and tightness.
Before the first start-up, preparatory procedures are carried out, including filter replacement and checking the basic systems. The engine is then started and monitored for proper operation and possible leaks.
An important part of the installation is testing carried out together with the machine operator. After the unit is started, its behaviour under combine operating conditions is checked. The operator can provide information regarding the machine's response, while the mechanics simultaneously monitor the engine operation and its cooperation with the remaining components.
A positive test result, absence of leaks, and proper unit operation allow the installation process to be completed. After the work is completed, an installation report is prepared. This means that the entire process includes not only engine overhaul, but also its correct installation and testing in the target machine.
Engine service after overhaul - inspection after 50 operating hours
The engine overhaul does not end when the unit is installed and the machine is returned to work. The first operating period after rebuilding is particularly important, which is why we recommend carrying out the first inspection after 50 operating hours.
As part of such an inspection, our mechanics visit the customer and check not only the filters and basic operating parameters of the unit. The general condition of the auxiliary equipment, connections, and components installed during the previous work is also inspected.
Among other things, cable connections, the condition of the cooling and intake systems, and potential leak points are checked. This inspection makes it possible to detect any irregularities that may have developed during normal operation of the machine.
