Engine Repair - Example of Liebherr R 974 C Crawler Excavator

Engine Repair - Example of Liebherr R 974 C Crawler Excavator

Repairing an engine, such as an internal combustion engine, is a complex process that requires significant experience and, most importantly, an accurate diagnosis of what needs to be replaced and why it is not functioning. Therefore, the first task performed by our specialists is a detailed engine verification, which involves checking individual components and assessing their wear and tear. The engine accessories are inspected first, followed by the entire crankshaft-piston system. Only after a thorough verification can we proceed with further technical work. We can illustrate this process with a specific example. In our workshop, we repaired the engine of a Liebherr R 974 C crawler excavator, which had shown signs of poor condition due to intensive use and indeed required extensive repairs.

The repair work involved replacing most of the basic parts that ensure proper engine operation. Bushings, pistons, rings, and securing pins were replaced, along with main bearings and connecting rod bearings. Surprisingly, the crankshaft and camshaft remained in good condition, much to the amazement of the mechanics. They only needed to go through a polishing process and could be placed back into the system.

Further repair tasks included installing new injectors and a high-pressure pump in the fuel system. The water pump in the cooling system was refurbished, and new thermostats were installed. Worn-out oil pumps were replaced with new ones. Other components that underwent refurbishment included connecting rods, turbochargers, cylinder heads, and starters. The entire engine was equipped with a new set of seals, gaskets, and filters, and the final stage of the work involved testing the unit and performing initial break-in on our engine dynamometer.

We have carried out many similar engine repairs for Liebherr machines as well as other manufacturers. The engines we repair undergo testing to ensure that everything functions correctly. In this way, we aim to minimize the risk for the customer of any issues arising after the installation. For those interested, we have a dedicated online service focused solely on diesel engines.

Tips for ongoing use

The best conclusion to the above case would be some advice on operating this type of machine to avoid similar costly repairs in the future. Here are a few brief tips regarding vehicle operation and maintenance: regular inspections, avoid prolonged idling as it can lead to excessive wear and carbon buildup inside the engine, avoid sudden load changes, allow the engine to warm up before starting work, maintain cleanliness around the engine by removing accumulated dirt, impurities, excess oil, and fuel, avoid overloading, use high-quality oil and fuel according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Remember that the above tips are very general, and each equipment has its own specifics. It's always best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and, in case of any serious performance issues, contact a professional service provider.
