The South Korean concern and car manufacturer Daewoo was founded on March 22, 1967 and for many years was the second largest conglomerate in Korea. At its peak, the company generated almost 10% of the country's GDP. As a result of financial problems caused mainly by the mismanagement of the concern's management, on November 1, 1999, Daewoo declared bankruptcy. In Korean, the manufacturer's name means "Big World".
The Korean company's cars were produced in numerous plants in developing countries, such as Poland, and although they were backward in terms of technology, they were widely appreciated for their reliability.
The Daewoo Construction Machinery Division is now part of the Doosan Group.
