Poor airflow in the construction machine cabin - Causes, diagnostics, and solutions

The work of an excavator, loader, or bulldozer operator during the summer or winter season requires a fully functional ventilation and air conditioning system. Poor airflow in the cabin is a problem that not only reduces comfort but also directly affects safety and work efficiency. Fogged windows or excessively high temperatures in the cabin negatively impact the operator's concentration. Below we present a diagnostic guide based on standard service procedures for construction machines.

1. Main problem: Low airflow efficiency

The symptom of the malfunction is a noticeably weak airflow coming from the air vent, despite setting the maximum blower power on the control panel. During diagnostics, mechanical and operational causes should be eliminated before proceeding to more complicated electrical repairs or actuator elements.

2. First cause: Dirty air filters

Construction machines operate in high dust conditions. The most common cause of restricted airflow is a clogged external (cabin) air filter or a closed-loop (recirculation) filter.

Diagnostics and step by step:

  • Verification of air inlets: Check the condition of the external air intakes and inlets to the cabin. They are often blocked by leaves, mud, dust, or debris.
  • Inspection of the external filter: Remove the cabin filter and assess the degree of its contamination and moisture. A filter that has not been replaced for a long time becomes baked due to moisture and dust, completely blocking airflow.
  • Check the internal circulation filter: Also check the closed-loop filter located inside the cabin (often under the operator's seat or in the side panel).

Solution:

Clean the air inlet from accumulated contaminants. For cabin filters (external and internal), it is recommended to replace them with new ones. Blowing out the filter with compressed air is only a temporary solution, as the micropores of the filter material remain clogged.

3. Second cause: Closed throttle / air vent grille

A trivial but relatively common cause in the daily operational practice of construction machines. The airflow in the cabin may work at full power, but the airflow does not reach the operator due to mechanical closure of the ducts.

Diagnostics and step by step:

  • Air vents (Manual): Check the physical condition of the air vents (nozzles) in the cabin. They are often accidentally closed or turned towards the cabin wall.
  • Control flaps / Throttles: In newer machines, check if the mechanism or actuator controlling the distribution flaps (e.g., for the front windshield, for the legs, for the chest) is not stuck in the closed position.

Solution:

Manually open the air vents and set them in the desired direction. If the cables or actuators of the air throttles are blocked, their proper control should be restored or the damaged element replaced.
