Machine operation in hot weather
Summer is a time of intense work in the construction industry. Contractors must take advantage of favorable weather conditions, but at the same time a specific problem arises - possible high temperatures.
The heat affects both people and machines, which combined with haste leads to various malfunctions and even breakdowns.
Therefore, it is worth knowing how to properly operate a construction machine during the heat to avoid costly surprises - in this guide we list the most important rules.
The indicator light (not always) tells you the truth
Operators of modern machines often rely on electronics, whose task is to detect any problems with the equipment's operation early and inform about it using messages displayed in the cabin.
This system works solidly and can be relied upon, but only when all sensors are working, and unfortunately this can vary.
A damaged sensor does not transmit information to the diagnostic system, so the computer cannot warn the operator about, for example, too high engine temperature.
It is easy to get the impression that the machine is working perfectly and nothing is wrong with it. If the operator is not vigilant, a serious breakdown may occur. Sometimes it is worth following your intuition in such situations, of course combined with common sense and technical knowledge.
Therefore, it is wise to periodically conduct a diagnostic system test, i.e. check if the computer is not returning any errors. Sensors are delicate electronics that can simply refuse to obey in an intensively used construction machine.
Morning rituals
Before starting work, especially when forecasts indicate that the day will be hot - the operator should meticulously check basic things in the machine.
We start of course with the control of operating fluids:
- coolant
- hydraulic oil
- engine oil
Finding a low level of oil or fluid should light up a warning lamp in the operator's head.
Not only should the fluids be topped up, but also the cause of their loss should be sought. If we are talking about the case of hydraulic oil, then almost certainly there will be some leakage in the system.
Worse, if a low level of engine oil or coolant is found. In such a situation, it is better to commission a machine service, which will allow to detect the source of the leak and prevent a costly breakdown. Operating a machine with a low level of fluids is a straight way to shorten the life of the equipment.
Lubricating the machine
A very important issue is lubricating the machine. If the equipment does not have a central lubrication system, then unfortunately this task has to be done manually.
It is a tedious task, which is why many operators treat it stepmotherly, and proper lubrication of hydraulic elements guarantees trouble-free operation even during the heat.
During the morning review, you should also pay close attention to any play and cracks. If they appear, of course, repair is necessary, otherwise the operator's comfort and safety will be significantly reduced.
Let's not forget about basic service activities, such as regular replacement of filters and oils. During the summer period, when working in high temperatures and with high dust, this should be done more often.
Machine working poorly? Time to call for service
Summer is short, so construction companies are very keen to have machines working almost non-stop.
However, sometimes it is not worth operating the equipment at all costs. If during work the operator notices any irregularities, e.g. suspicious sounds, increase in engine temperature or power loss, the task should be stopped immediately and service should be called.
From the point of view of the company's interest, it is much more profitable to have a one or two-day downtime than to risk that the machine will be immobilized for many weeks due to a serious breakdown.
