Running gear - tips and advice

The good condition of the running gear not only affects the efficiency of the machine, especially in difficult terrain, but also the comfort and safety of the operator. Unfortunately, many machine owners do not pay attention to the condition of the gear elements, which is the main cause of sudden and costly breakdowns.

They can be avoided, but it requires adherence to basic operational rules, which we quote in our guide.

Critical elements of the chassis

The chassis of a construction machine hides many parts that wear out naturally during intensive work. It is particularly important to regularly check the condition of the differentials and axles, as their repair, let alone replacement, involves considerable cost and immobilization of the machine for a long time.

It is important to frequently check the oil level in the differential, as any leaks are an indication that the axle seals will most likely need to be replaced.

Another element that needs to be closely monitored is any play in the drive shaft, as they require immediate removal, otherwise the machine will be less efficient and harder to handle. On the other hand, worn out universal joints can even pose a risk to the operator's safety.

Regular tire replacement is essential!

Tires are probably the most neglected element of the running gear in wheeled machines. Meanwhile, they are the ones that most often fail, which is usually a consequence of neglect by the owner. The tire's service life should not be artificially extended. Worn tires are replaced with new ones, necessarily in the size recommended by the machine manufacturer.

We also pay attention to the condition of the rims. If they are already heavily worn, loose and bent, they should be replaced as soon as possible. Otherwise, this may negatively affect the condition of the other elements of the running gear, especially the axles.

tracks

We monitor the work of the tracks

In tracked machines, final drive failures occur very often. Such a fault can be easily detected - just listen to the operation of the system. If alarming, metallic sounds are coming from the chassis, it usually indicates a final drive failure.

The operator should also occasionally check whether both tracks are working evenly. If not, the fault usually lies with the damaged drive motor.

Finally, let's mention the need to check whether there is a noticeable drop in machine performance after the engine has warmed up. Such a symptom may indicate a fault in the running gear, which should be diagnosed by a professional service.
