Don't let a minor oil leak stop your business.
Symptoms, causes, and repair methods
External oil leaks in a diesel engine
Engine failure caused by a sudden drop in oil level is one of the most common issues in construction machinery and heavy duty work vehicles. Increased engine oil consumption in a diesel engine doesn't always mean it's burning in the combustion chamber — external leaks are just as common a cause.
Below, we explain how to diagnose this issue, what its effects are, and how to properly perform the repair.

Why WIBAKO?
Symptoms and diagnosis of an external oil leak
Excessive oil loss noticed on the dipstick often goes hand in hand with other symptoms, such as:
Visible oil stains under the machine or traces on the engine block and oil pan
Presence of fresh or burnt oil around gaskets (e.g., valve cover, oil pan, crankshaft seals)
A characteristic burnt oil smell resulting from the fluid coming into contact with hot exhaust system components
Early detection of the leak location helps prevent severe failures, such as engine seizure, damage to rubber components in accessories, or environmental pollution.
Why does this happen?
Causes of external leaks in diesel engines
The causes of external leaks are most commonly associated with daily, intensive engine operation under harsh working conditions. The main contributing factors include:
Loosening of bolted connections — vibrations generated by a diesel engine working under load can cause mounting bolts (e.g., oil pan, valve cover, or timing cover) to loosen and unseal over time.
Wear and aging of gaskets — high operating temperatures, material aging, and exposure to chemicals lead to hardening and cracking of rubber, cork, and composite seals.

Step-by-step instructions
How to fix an external leak?
Fixing the issue involves restoring proper clamping pressure and tightness at the joint surfaces. The repair should be carried out according to the scheme below.
1. Locating the source of the leak
Before starting work, thoroughly clean the engine of accumulated dirt and old oil using brake cleaner or a degreaser. Then, after running the engine briefly, pinpoint the exact location where oil is escaping.
2. Tightening mounting bolts
In case of a minor leak around housings or covers:
Tighten loose mounting bolts to the correct torque (according to the engine manufacturer's recommendations).
Use a torque wrench to avoid stripping threads or warping the cover.
3. Replacing gaskets
If tightening the bolts didn't work or the gasket suffered mechanical damage/hardening:
Disassemble the component.
Thoroughly clean mating surfaces of old gasket residue and silicone sealants.
Install a new gasket dedicated to the specific engine model.
Tighten mounting bolts to the recommended torque, maintaining the correct tightening sequence.

Do you offer mobile service with on-site assistance in the event of a breakdown?
Yes, we have a fleet of mobile service vehicles that travel directly to construction sites, quarries and storage yards. Our mobile service operates throughout Poland and also abroad, including Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. On-site, we carry out diagnostics and repairs or remove the faulty component for reconditioning at our stationary workshop.
What brands and types of machinery does WIBAKO service?
We specialize in the comprehensive servicing of construction and road machinery, including excavators, wheel loaders, bulldozers, articulated dump trucks and cranes. We service and overhaul components for most well-known brands, such as Caterpillar, Liebherr, Komatsu, Volvo, Perkins, Deutz, Cummins, Hitachi, Hyundai and Case.
Do you also sell spare parts?
Yes, WIBAKO is not only a service provider but also has a well-stocked spare parts warehouse. We offer hydraulic system components, internal combustion engine parts, seals, drivetrain components and accessories. When you purchase parts directly from us, we also offer a lower hourly labor rate for their installation.
