Hanomag stands for Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG. The company was founded in Linden (now it is a district of Hanover), and its origins date back to 1835 and are related to the construction of steam engines, agricultural machinery and locomotives.
Before World War II, Hanomag focused mainly on the production of passenger vehicles, the buyers of which were usually the richer part of society. Although the products of the German company were more toys than wonders of technology, they were luxury goods at that time. A characteristic feature of these vehicles was the same shape of the front and rear, low weight of the vehicle and modest interior. In turn, the production of Hanomag construction machinery and parts began in 1931.
The Hanomag company during World War II
During World War II, the company participated in the production of equipment for military operations, incl. light tractors, armored personnel carriers and parts for tracked vehicles. After its completion, Hanomag focused on the production of trucks, tractors, machines and parts for construction machinery, which resulted in the launch of a pioneering wheel loader (B70 model) in 1959.
The history of the German company is marked by numerous ownership transformations. In the seventies, a significant stake in the company was first taken over by Daimler Benz, and later also by Massey Ferguson. At the beginning of 1980, the German entrepreneur Horst-Dieter Esch purchased and joined Hanomag to his international concern IBH, thus creating the world's largest consortium of construction machinery. A few years later, he was sentenced by a court sentence, which forced Hanomag to change ownership. In 1989, the Japanese construction equipment manufacturer Komatsu acquired a majority stake in the company, in 2002 bought the remaining shares, and in September 2016 the company changed its name to Komatsu Germany GmbH.
