Remanufactured six-cylinder diesel engine on a pallet in a parts warehouse with shelving

The Liebherr D936 powers many excavators and wheel loaders that have tens of thousands of operating hours behind them. Sooner or later they need engine parts, from a single gasket to a complete piston and liner kit. At WIBAKO we stock D936 parts in three versions: new, used (dismantled) and remanufactured. We ship them from our warehouse in Kojszówka, Poland. Stock levels change constantly, and the current list of parts is shown below this article.

Below we describe the part groups customers ask about most often and what to watch out for when selecting them. If you are not sure whether a part fits, send us the part number or the engine serial number. We will check compatibility before anything is shipped.

Liebherr D936 – what to know before ordering

The D936 is Liebherr's turbocharged six-cylinder inline diesel with a 122 mm bore and a displacement of approx. 10.5 l. It is found mainly in two variants:

The base components of both versions are often shared, but the ancillaries frequently differ. That is why the designation “D936” alone is not enough to order parts. From our own jobs we know this engine from, among others, Liebherr R 936 and R 946 excavators and L 566 and L 586 wheel loaders.

Block, housings and cylinder heads

Housings and sumps

This is the largest group of D936 parts we carry. It includes:

  • oil pans,
  • timing gear housings,
  • flywheel housings,
  • valve covers,
  • accessory housings.

When selecting an oil pan or flywheel housing, the machine matters, not just the engine. An excavator and a wheel loader may have a differently shaped oil pan, a different position of the oil pickup and drain plug, and different flanges for the hydraulic pump or transmission. Check a used housing for cracks around the mounting holes and for the condition of the threads.

Cylinder heads

D936 cylinder heads most often fail after overheating or after prolonged operation with a leaking injector. Typical symptoms are coolant loss, combustion gases in the expansion tank or oil in the coolant. We stock complete cylinder heads as well as head components, including valve seats and valve guides.

A used or remanufactured cylinder head should pass several checks:

  • a pressure test,
  • a flatness check of the sealing face,
  • an inspection of the valve seats and guides.

When replacing a cylinder head, always use a new head gasket and new bolts if the manufacturer specifies them as single-use.

Intake, exhaust and fuel system

Intake and exhaust

This group includes:

  • turbochargers,
  • intake and exhaust manifolds,
  • charge air pipes,
  • manifold gaskets, e.g. the metal intake manifold gasket.

The turbocharger type depends on the engine version and the machine, so select it by part number. Before fitting a new or used turbo, eliminate the cause of the previous failure. Most often it is oil starvation, a clogged air filter or a foreign object in the intake.

Fuel system

This group covers injectors and Bosch injector nozzles, feed pumps, fuel filter heads and lines. The injection system is where the A6 and A7 versions differ the most, so check compatibility by part number only.

  • After replacing only the nozzle, the injector must be set to the correct opening pressure and its spray pattern checked on a test bench.
  • Replace injectors as a set, or at least test all of them, not just the one that is “knocking”.
  • After a feed pump failure, replace the fuel filters and bleed the system.

Lubrication and cooling system

Lubrication system

We carry oil pumps, oil coolers, filter heads, oil pickups and lines. A drop in oil pressure does not always mean a worn pump. Common causes are worn bearing shells, a clogged pickup or a faulty pressure relief valve.

After a bearing seizure or a turbo failure, metal debris circulates in the system. The oil cooler must then be replaced or flushed very thoroughly. Otherwise the new pump and new bearings will soon share the fate of the old ones.

Cooling system

This group includes water pumps, thermostats and their housings, hoses and radiators. The D936 has wet cylinder liners, so the condition of the coolant directly affects their service life. Wrong or degraded coolant promotes cavitation, i.e. pitting of the outer liner wall. This eventually leads to coolant leaking into the oil pan.

Seals and repair kits

The most frequently ordered items in this group are:

For overhauls we also have separate repair kits for both versions: Liebherr D936 A6 L engine repair kit and D936 A7 repair kit. Check the kit contents on the product page.

With seals, the part number is not the only thing that matters. Before fitting, also check the condition of the mating surfaces. A crankshaft seal fitted on a grooved sealing surface will leak regardless of its quality.

Electrical system

This group includes starters, alternators, sensors (oil pressure, temperature, crankshaft and camshaft position) and wiring harnesses. A fault code does not always mean a faulty sensor. Often the culprit is a connector, a chafed wire or a genuine mechanical problem. Before ordering a sensor, read and interpret the fault code. Our article on diagnosing fault codes on Liebherr D934 and D936 engines will help.

How to select a part for the D936 engine

Selecting by part number leads to the fewest mistakes. For your enquiry, have ready:

  1. The Liebherr part number from the old part or from the parts catalogue (e.g. 9079516, 10118556).
  2. The engine serial number and designation from the type plate on the block, including the version: L A6 or A7.
  3. The machine model and serial number. These are needed for installation-dependent parts: oil pans, housings and lines.
  4. Photos of the old part and the type plate if the number is illegible.

Based on this, we will offer a genuine part, an aftermarket alternative or a used or remanufactured unit and confirm compatibility before shipping. Send your enquiry via the form or give us a call.

Liebherr D936 engine overhaul and rebuild at WIBAKO

When the damage goes beyond a single part, overhauling the whole engine is usually more cost-effective. One example is the overhaul of a Liebherr D936 A7 engine in an R 936 excavator. The scope of such work is described on our diesel engine repair and overhaul page.

  • Inspection of the block, crankshaft and cylinder heads: measurements, pressure tests and assessment of what can be reconditioned.
  • Crankshaft grinding, replacement of liners, pistons, rings and bearings, cylinder head reconditioning.
  • Assembly with new seals and gaskets and an engine test run before handover.

If the machine cannot be down for long, a complete engine is an alternative, e.g. a Liebherr D936 L A6 engine. For fitting parts bought from WIBAKO, the labour rate is PLN 190 net per hour. Travel to the machine is charged at PLN 3 net per km, both ways.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check whether a part fits my Liebherr D936 engine?

The most reliable way is by the Liebherr part number from the old part or by the engine serial number from the type plate. Send us these numbers together with the machine model and we will check compatibility and possible alternatives.

How do the D936 L A6 and D936 A7 versions differ when ordering parts?

The versions differ in fuel system components, engine control and some of the sensors, among other things. Base components, e.g. the timing gear housing gasket, are often shared. Compatibility must be checked for each part individually, by part number.

Do used D936 parts come with a warranty?

The terms depend on the type and condition of the specific part. Ask about them for the given product before buying and we will confirm them with your order.

Can you fit parts bought from WIBAKO?

Yes. For fitting parts bought from us, the labour rate is PLN 190 net per hour. Travel to the machine is charged at PLN 3 net per km, both ways.

Is it better to overhaul a D936 engine or buy another one?

It depends on the condition of the block, crankshaft and cylinder heads and on how long the machine can be out of service. After inspecting the dismantled engine, we will advise what is more cost-effective in your case.
