The Liebherr D924 is an inline four-cylinder diesel engine. In our workshop we see it most often in Liebherr LTM series mobile cranes. It has a simple design and takes well to overhauls, provided you have access to the right parts: from gaskets and fuel water separators, through pistons and liners, to complete engines.
The WIBAKO online shop stocks D924 parts that are new (genuine Liebherr and aftermarket), used from dismantled engines, and remanufactured. We ship them from our warehouse in Kojszówka, Poland. Stock changes constantly, so the current list of available items is shown below this article. Here we describe the part groups we carry most often and what to watch out for when selecting them.
D924 engine versions – why the full designation matters
The D924 name covers several versions. The ones we see most are the D924 T-E and D924 TI-E with additional suffixes such as A1, A2 or A4; the letters TI usually indicate a version with charge air cooling. The versions differ in ancillaries, fuel system, engine management and sealing details. The same engine name therefore does not automatically mean the same parts.
What they share is the core: a block with wet, replaceable cylinder liners with a 122 mm bore. Even here there are differences, though. Overhaul kits come in a version with a 2 O-ring liner and a version with a 3 O-ring liner, such as the Sonne overhaul kit with 3 O-ring liner. Before ordering, check which variant is fitted in your block.
Housings, sumps and seals

This is the largest group of D924 parts in our warehouse. It includes flywheel housings, timing covers, oil sumps, valve covers, and thermostat and filter housings. For cast components, used parts are often a good choice: new ones are expensive and frequently hard to source.
When choosing a used housing, check a few things:
- no cracks or signs of welding;
- condition of the mating surfaces and threads;
- position of mounting points, sensor ports and the drain plug, as these details vary between versions.
Seals include cylinder head gaskets, sump and manifold gaskets, crankshaft oil seals, liner O-rings, and upper and lower gasket sets. A practical rule: if you open up an area of the engine, replace all the seals in it. For example, the rear crankshaft seal should be replaced every time the flywheel comes off, because taking it apart again costs many times more than the seal itself.
Fuel system

This group covers fuel feed pumps, fuel filters and water separators, injection lines, injection components and sensors. Liebherr used several types of fuel water separators on the D924. They differ in connections, filter thread, water-in-fuel sensor and heater, so order them by part number, not by appearance.
Only fit used injection components after they have been tested on a test bench. Water and contamination in the fuel are the most common cause of injection system failures. When replacing the pump or injectors, change the filters, clean the tank and flush the lines, otherwise the new part will soon share the fate of the old one.
Intake, exhaust and lubrication system
On the intake and exhaust side we have turbochargers, manifolds, pipes and elbows. Charge-air-cooled versions also include intercooler components. Before fitting a new turbocharger, find out why the previous one failed. Typical causes are oil starvation, an intake leak or a neglected air filter.
The lubrication system includes oil pumps, oil coolers, filter housings, valves and piston cooling nozzles. A leaking oil cooler is a common cause of oil mixing with coolant. After replacing it, flush the lubrication and cooling systems, and if the engine has run on emulsion for a longer time, check the bearings.
Crank train and valve train

The crank train includes the crankshaft, connecting rods, bearing shells, rings, flywheel and vibration damper. It also includes the ⌀122 mm pistons and liners, available for example as the Liebherr D924 engine overhaul kit with 3 O-rings. The valve train consists of the camshaft, tappets, rocker arms, valves with guides and seats, and timing gears.
- Crankshaft: measure the journals before buying bearing shells. After regrinding, oversize bearings are required.
- Pistons and liners: replace them as a set per cylinder, together with rings and liner O-rings.
- Valve train: check gear backlash and camshaft lobe condition. When reconditioning the cylinder head, match the valves to the machined seats.
Electrical system
For the D924 we stock starters, alternators, oil pressure, temperature and speed sensors, as well as wiring harnesses and control components for electronic versions. With sensors, compare the connector, thread and measuring range. With control units, what counts is the part number and software, not just a similar appearance.
How to select a part for the D924 engine
- Read the full engine designation (e.g. D924 TI-E A4) and serial number from the engine nameplate.
- Note the Liebherr part number from the old part or from the machine's parts catalogue.
- Provide the model and serial number of the machine the engine is fitted in.
- Take photos of the part, especially connections, mounting points and labels.
Based on this, we will check compatibility and suggest the available options: genuine, aftermarket (e.g. Sonne), or a used or remanufactured part. Send us an enquiry with these details and we will tell you what we have in stock.
Liebherr D924 overhaul and rebuild at WIBAKO
When an engine has blow-by, burns oil, loses oil pressure or knocks, replacing individual parts is usually not enough. We overhaul D924 engines at our workshop in Kojszówka as part of our diesel engine repair and overhaul service. The process involves:
- disassembly and cleaning;
- dimensional inspection of the block, crankshaft and cylinder head;
- machining of reusable components;
- assembly with new parts;
- start-up and parameter check.
We describe the typical faults of this model in our post on Liebherr D924 TI-E A4 engine service and repair. An example project is shown in the D924 TI-E engine overhaul in an LTM 1200/1 crane.
If an overhaul is not cost-effective or downtime is critical, a complete engine is an alternative, e.g. the Liebherr D924 TI-E A4. We can also fit parts purchased from WIBAKO: the labour rate for installation is PLN 190 net per hour.
Machines with the Liebherr D924 engine
We have overhauled and serviced the D924 in Liebherr mobile cranes including the LTM 1055-3.1, LTM 1080/1, LTM 1090-4.1, LTM 1150-5.1, LTM 1200/1, LTM 1220 and LTM 1250/1. This engine was also fitted in other Liebherr machines. Regardless of the machine model, part selection is determined by the designation on the engine nameplate, not by the machine type alone.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check whether a part fits my Liebherr D924 engine?
The most reliable way is by the Liebherr part number from the old part, together with the full engine designation and serial number from the nameplate. Send us these details and we will verify compatibility before shipping.
Are D924 T-E and D924 TI-E parts the same?
Some components are shared, but the versions differ in ancillaries, fuel system and sealing details. Even the ⌀122 mm cylinder liners come in 2 and 3 O-ring variants, so it is best to select parts by part number.
Do used Liebherr D924 parts come with a warranty?
Terms for used parts depend on the specific item and are stated in the offer. Please ask about them before purchasing.
Can I buy a complete Liebherr D924 engine?
Yes, complete D924 engines in various versions, including T-E and TI-E, appear in our shop. Stock changes, so it is best to confirm current availability by phone or email.
Do you overhaul Liebherr D924 engines?
Yes, we overhaul D924 engines at our workshop in Kojszówka, including those from Liebherr LTM cranes. The scope of work is determined after disassembly and inspection of the parts.
