Why won't the diesel engine in the machine start?

Downtime of a construction machine on a building site or agricultural equipment during intensive work is every operator's and business owner's nightmare. Wasted hours, schedule delays and rising costs – in the construction industry, time directly means money. When you turn the ignition key and the power unit does not respond, the key to success is a quick and accurate diagnosis. At WIBAKO, we know how valuable a fully operational machine is. Based on our many years of service experience, we know that many faults making starting difficult can be detected and eliminated directly on the construction site. Below, we present a detailed step-by-step diagnostic guide.

The first and most common cause

No fuel and air in the fuel system

The simplest and, at the same time, extremely common cause of an engine being unable to start is a problem with the fuel supply system.

Empty or nearly empty fuel tankIn machines operating on difficult, inclined terrain, a low fuel level in the tank often leads to a situation where the fuel supply pump starts drawing air instead of diesel fuel. Even a temporary lack of fuel supply immediately causes a diesel starting problem.

Air entering the fuel system

When air enters the fuel lines, air pockets form in the fuel system. Unlike petrol engines, an air-locked fuel system in a diesel engine prevents the required pressure from being generated at the injectors, resulting in a failure to ignite even after fuel has been added to the tank.

A hidden problem with tank ventilation

Vacuum in the fuel tank

A hidden reason for the lack of ignition may lie in the design of the fuel tank itself.

The role of the filler cap and the formation of a vacuum

During engine operation and continuous consumption of diesel fuel, the pressure inside the tank must be equalized. This is handled by a vent valve, usually located in the filler cap. If this valve becomes contaminated or blocked, the decreasing fuel level creates a strong vacuum inside the tank. The resulting suction force acts against the fuel pump, preventing fuel from being delivered to the further parts of the system.

Contaminated fuel filter and deposits in the tank

The quality of the fuel supplied directly affects the condition of the entire injection system.

Symptoms and consequences of contamination

The accumulation of deposits, water and dirt particles in the tank leads to the gradual clogging of filter components. In our service department, we often see how neglected filter elements lead to a complete blockage of the flow.

Typical symptoms include:

Uneven engine operation before stalling,

No response when attempting to restart,

A drastic loss of machine power under load.

A clogged filter or sludge accumulated at the bottom of the tank effectively cuts off the fuel supply to the injection pump. For this reason, cleaning the fuel filter, draining accumulated water from the separator and regularly flushing the tank are key elements of preventive maintenance.

Temperature below 0°C

Effect of low temperatures on the fuel supply system

Winter is particularly demanding for diesel engines. Starting a diesel engine in winter involves changes in the physicochemical properties of diesel fuel.

Paraffin crystallization on frosty days

When temperatures fall below 0°C, paraffin begins to separate from summer diesel fuel or fuel that has not been properly protected. It forms a thick, waxy deposit that immediately blocks the micropores in the fuel filter and lines. As a result, despite a functioning pump and a charged battery, fuel cannot reach the combustion chamber.

Battery and starter motor

Problems with the electrical system

Even a perfectly clean fuel system will not allow the engine to start if the electrical starting system fails.

Insufficient battery power

Diesel engines require significantly higher starting current than petrol engines due to their high compression ratio. A damaged battery in the machine or a battery with reduced efficiency cannot rotate the crankshaft at a sufficient speed, which prevents the temperature necessary for self-ignition of the mixture from being generated.

Starter motor malfunctions

The situation in which the starter motor does not turn ("does not engage") most often results from two main causes:

Installation faults: Corroded cables, loose ground connections or voltage drops at the terminals.

Component wear: Solenoid failure, worn brushes or damage to the starter motor winding.

Professional construction machinery service

WIBAKO technical support and summary

Many basic causes can be identified during a preliminary machine inspection. However, if the source of the problem lies deeper – involving the high-pressure pump, injectors or mechanical wear of the engine – professional technical expertise is necessary.

In such cases, it is worth trusting specialists. WIBAKO diesel engine service provides comprehensive diagnostics, professional component remanufacturing and on-site mobile support at the location of the breakdown. Contact us to restore your machines to full working order!
