Liebherr D936 LA6 – 10-liter special-purpose unit
In today's post, we take a look inside the powerful, 10-liter Liebherr D936 LA6 engine, which is used in mobile cranes, loaders, and excavators, among others. This is another construction that shows that not only small is beautiful – large engines can also surprise with their functionality, durability, and thoughtful design.
Characteristics of the D936 LA6 engine – where is it used?
The D936 LA6 engine is a unit designed for heavy construction and lifting equipment. Its design has been adapted for operation under high load conditions:
- Displacement: 10.5 liters
- Power range: from 200 to 320 kW (approx. 435 HP)
- Maximum RPM: approx. 2000 rpm
- Applications: mobile cranes, excavators, loaders, heavy equipment
The version presented in the video comes from a crane – hence the characteristic flat oil pan and the presence of a compressor.
Gear-driven timing system – solidity and precision
As befits heavy-duty equipment, the D936 engine uses a gear-driven timing system. It is used both for valve control (rear timing) and for driving additional components:
- Hydraulic pump
- Water pump
- Compressor (in crane version)
This arrangement guarantees durability and reliability even under prolonged load.
Fuel system and turbocharger – classic power
The engine utilizes a simple fuel system with single fuel pumps and coils. The presented unit features a turbocharger supported by an intercooler, which ensures proper cooling of the intake air. This allows for an increase in the amount of air in the cylinders, and consequently – also fuel, which translates into higher power and work efficiency.
D936 in crane version – what sets it apart?
In addition to the flat oil pan, the D936 LA6 model in the crane version is equipped with:
- A different flywheel housing
- A special ZBS system, not available in engines mounted in excavators or loaders
- A wet cylinder liner, which better handles high loads and high operating temperatures
All of this makes this engine ideal for equipment with a high degree of utilization.
Liebherr – German precision in heavy-duty form
The Liebherr brand, founded in 1949 by Hans Liebherr in Germany, and now headquartered in Switzerland, is known for producing reliable construction machines and power units. The D936 is another proof that German engineering is still thriving – especially where power, reliability, and ease of servicing are needed.
