This page covers wheel loaders only. For excavators, dozers and cranes, see [Liebherr machine service and repair](https://wibako.com/services/construction-machinery-service/liebherr-service). Liebherr loaders differ from most competing machines in their travel drive. Instead of a powershift transmission with a torque converter, they use a hydrostatic transmission. That is why diagnosis and repair work differently here than on loaders from other brands.

WIBAKO has been servicing Liebherr machines for years, covering hydraulics, diesel engines and drivetrains. Below we describe how these loaders are built, the symptoms of typical faults and how we repair them.

## Liebherr wheel loader design – what you need to know before a repair

The range includes compact machines (L 506–L 528, including Stereo versions with additional rear-axle steering), mid-size machines (L 538–L 546) and large loaders for heavy-duty work, e.g. L 550, L 556, L 566, L 576, L 580 and L 586. All of them share a hydrostatic travel drive. The diesel engine drives a variable-displacement piston pump. In a closed circuit, the pump feeds one or two hydraulic motors, which drive the axles via a transfer gearbox and propshafts.

- **Older large models (e.g. L 564, L 574, L 580 2plus2)** – a gearbox with two hydraulic motors. At higher speeds one of them is disengaged. A failure of the disconnect clutch or of one of the motors produces very distinctive symptoms.
- **Newer large models with XPower drive** – a power-split drive in which the hydrostatic and mechanical paths work together, with their share changing according to travel speed. Diagnosis requires reading the controller data and taking measurements on both paths.
- **Braking** – when you take your foot off the drive pedal, the hydrostatic system itself slows the machine down. As a result, the service brakes wear slowly, and braking problems are more often caused by the hydraulics than by the linings.
- **Attachment linkage** – Z-bar linkage or parallel (industrial) linkage. In both cases, pins and bushings wear fastest, especially when lubrication is neglected.

## Fault symptoms we most often see on Liebherr loaders

A symptom alone rarely points to a single component. It does, however, help narrow down the diagnosis:

- **Lack of pushing power when entering a pile, machine stalls under load** – worn travel pump or motor, leaking valves in the closed circuit, incorrect pressure settings or a loss of diesel engine power.
- **Jerky starts, different tractive force in forward and reverse** – wear of the pump's rotating group, a problem with the controller or with sensors and proportional control.
- **Hydraulic oil overheating** – increasing internal leakage in pumps and motors, a clogged cooler, a faulty thermostatic valve or fan drive.
- **Machine will not shift to the higher speed range** – on twin-motor transmissions, often the clutch or the motor of the second path.
- **Whining and knocking from the axles, leaks at the hubs** – worn bearings, differential or planetary final drives.
- **Play in the bucket and boom, attachment drifting down** – worn pins and bushings or internal leakage in cylinders and the control valve.
- **Error messages and limp mode** – the cause has to be read from the controller. Our guide to [Liebherr machine error codes](https://wibako.com/about-us/technical-hub/734-) can help.

## Scope of our Liebherr wheel loader service

![Hydraulic piston pump for a Liebherr wheel loader](https://wibako.com/media/articles/article-719/slot2-p-913d8d5c.webp)

The work is carried out by separate teams: one specialises in hydraulics, the other in diesel engines. This way, each system is handled by mechanics who work on it every day.

### Hydrostatic drive and working hydraulics

We rebuild Linde, Rexroth and Liebherr's own hydraulic pumps and motors. Every unit is dismantled, cleaned and inspected: pistons, valve plates, cylinder blocks, shafts, bearings and seals. We look for scoring, scratches and signs of cavitation. Worn parts are replaced and sliding surfaces are lapped to the correct tolerances. After assembly, the unit is tested on a test bench, where we check pressure, flow and internal leakage. On control valves we eliminate internal leakage, and on cylinders we replace seals, hone the barrels and recondition the piston rods.

An important rule: when the travel pump fails, we always check the travel motor, the filters and oil cleanliness as well. Metal particles from one component circulate through the closed circuit. Replacing just one unit often ends in another failure.

### Axles, transfer gearbox and linkage

We repair and replace drive axles, differentials, final drives and transfer gearboxes, as well as propshafts and their universal joints. On the attachment linkage we replace pins and bushings, eliminate play and recondition the bores. The service life of these parts depends above all on lubrication, so it pays to keep the [central lubrication system](https://wibako.com/about-us/blog/856-excavator-central-lubrication-system-how-it-works-common-faults) in good working order. An example of a more extensive loader conversion for specific working conditions is described in our article on [preparing a Liebherr L566 for work at a landfill](https://wibako.com/about-us/news/845-the-manufacturer-didn-t-foresee-this-preparing-a-liebherr-l566-wheel-loader-for-a-waste-site).

## Engines in Liebherr loaders – overhaul or replacement

![Rebuilt yellow diesel engine on a pallet carried by a forklift in a parts warehouse](https://wibako.com/media/articles/article-719/slot3-e-d50b4d0e.webp)

Mid-size and large loaders are mainly powered by Liebherr D934, D936 and D946 series engines. We carry out complete overhauls of these engines: crankshaft grinding, cylinder head reconditioning, replacement of liners, pistons, rings and bearing shells, as well as Common Rail injection system and turbocharger repairs. Every rebuilt engine is load-tested on our own dynamometer rated up to 500 hp before it goes back into the machine.

When time is critical, an alternative to an overhaul is a ready-to-fit engine, e.g. the [Liebherr D936 A7](https://wibako.com/shop/diesel-engines/61284X76521-engine-liebherr-d936-a7). The decision should be based on the condition of the block and crankshaft after inspection, not just on the operating hours. An engine failure also often reveals neglected hydraulics. That was the case when [an engine installation in a Liebherr L564 turned into a hydraulic overhaul](https://wibako.com/about-us/news/831-how-did-a-simple-engine-installation-turn-into-a-full-hydraulic-overhaul-liebherr-l564).

## Diagnostics – measurements instead of guesswork

Newer Liebherr loaders have controllers that continuously monitor the engine, hydrostatic drive and safety systems. When a fault occurs, the machine can derate power or switch to limp mode. Diagnostics include:

- reading and interpreting error codes and viewing live parameters during operation,
- measuring pressures in the travel circuit, charge pressure and pressures in the working hydraulics,
- checking sensors, proportional valves and CAN communication,
- calibrating pumps and valves after component replacement.

## Mobile service for Liebherr wheel loaders

Taking a loader to a workshop means low-loader transport costs and extra days of downtime. That is why WIBAKO mechanics come to the machine in a service van equipped with tools, pressure gauges and diagnostic equipment. On site we carry out diagnostics, inspections, oil changes and oil filtration, fix leaks and sensor faults, and remove and install engines and pumps. If a component needs rebuilding, we take it to the workshop and, after the repair, refit it and recommission the machine.

Indicative rates: scheduled inspection PLN 1,400 net (excluding travel and materials), mechanic's labour PLN 230 net per hour, PLN 190 net per hour when fitting parts purchased from WIBAKO, travel PLN 3 net per kilometre, charged both ways.

## How a Liebherr loader repair works at WIBAKO

1. **Enquiry and initial analysis** – we discuss the symptoms by phone or email. It helps to provide the model, serial number and error codes.
2. **Service visit or component delivery** – the machine or component can be brought to our workshop in Kojszówka, shipped on a pallet, or you can call out our mobile service.
3. **Inspection and quotation** – we dismantle the component, measure wear and prepare a quote for your approval.
4. **Repair and testing** – once approved, we carry out the repair and test the component on a test bench or dynamometer.
5. **Installation and commissioning** – we install the component, calibrate the system and check the machine in operation.

If your Liebherr loader is losing power, overheating its oil or showing error codes, get in touch with us. We will determine whether a mobile service visit is enough or whether a workshop rebuild is needed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do you service Liebherr loaders where the machine is working?

Yes, WIBAKO mechanics travel in a service van to construction sites, gravel pits and landfills. Diagnostics and many repairs are carried out on site. If a component needs rebuilding, they remove it, repair it in the workshop and refit it to the machine.

### How much do the call-out and labour cost for a Liebherr loader?

Travel is charged at PLN 3 net per kilometre, both ways. A mechanic's labour costs PLN 230 net per hour, or PLN 190 net per hour when fitting parts purchased from WIBAKO. A scheduled inspection costs PLN 1,400 net, excluding travel and materials.

### Why does my Liebherr loader lose power when pushing into a pile?

The most common causes are a worn travel pump or motor in the hydrostatic circuit, faulty pressure control or a loss of diesel engine power. The cause is determined by pressure measurements and reading the controller data, not by the symptom alone.

### Do you rebuild hydrostatic drive pumps and motors from Liebherr loaders?

Yes, we rebuild Linde, Rexroth and Liebherr hydraulic pumps and motors. Every unit is tested on a test bench after assembly.

### Can I buy a ready-to-fit engine for a Liebherr loader instead of an overhaul?

Yes, the WIBAKO shop offers Liebherr engines, including the D934, D936 and D946. It is worth checking the current availability of a specific version by phone or email. An engine swap shortens downtime when an overhaul would take too long.
